You can adjust the sensitivity of the metal detection to suit your needs. Here are some sensitivity calibrations:

A .38 caliber hand gun will be detected at 7.75 inches away with the detector set on low sensitivity and 11 inches away set at optimum or high sensitivity.

A simple pen knife will be detected at 4 inches away set on low sensitivity and at 6 inches away set on high sensitivity.

A razor blade will be detected at 2 inches away set on low sensitivity and at 4 inches away set on optimum sensitivity.
